A CALL FOR PAPERS - “Black Lives Matter in the Americas: Race, Gender and Democracy”

A CALL FOR PAPERS

“Black Lives Matter in the Americas: Race, Gender and Democracy”

Edited by: Danielle Clealand (University of Texas, Austin), Gladys Mitchell-Walthour (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee), Minion K. C. Morrison (University of Delaware), and Cloves Oliveira (Federal University of Bahia).

A working group of editors from the Race and Democracy in the Americas Project (R&D) is organizing a volume of research papers documenting the current moment of urgency and visibility of differential access and disparity for African descendants in the Americas when the very core elements of democracy are being contested. The R&D Project has had a continuous existence since 1986. Its principal affiliations over the years have been with the National Conference of Black Political Scientists (NCOBPS) in the USA, the Black Movement in Brazil (MNU), and A Cor da Bahia of the Federal University of Brazil (UFBA). The purpose of the group of mostly social scientists and activists is to pursue the study of race as an essential variable in citizen participation and democratic governance among African descendants across the Americas. To date its foci have been problems in Brazil and the USA, and selected other countries.

We invite proposals for papers analyzing a variety of dimensions about the impact of the current conditions of democracy across the Americas within the context of broad social change movements across the Americas centered on “Black Lives Matter.” Some of the tentative topical themes around which the volume could be organized are: 1) Blacks and COVID-19; 2) Black feminism; 3) Political movements and mobilization of solidarity; 4) Social Media, technology and culture; 5) Race and public policy.

PAPERS SHOULD BE DIRECTED TO THE FOLLOWING ADDRESS:

LANGUAGE OF VOLUME: This will be an English language edition. A strong preference will be issued in the call for submissions in English. However, Portuguese and Spanish submissions will be accepted, with the proviso that if the paper is accepted an English version will be the responsibility of the author(s).
